VIKINGS @ THE WHARF 2018
From October 5-15, the Draken Harald Hårfagre Viking ship was docked at The Wharf in DC. Nearly 22 000 visitors experienced daily exhibits, deck tours and screenings of the Draken documentary. Visitors and guests also had the opportunity to marvel at the stories from crew members who participated in the ship's long journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
The week was also filled with events and seminars organized by the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce Mid-Atlantic, the Norwegian-American Defense Industry Council, and the Royal Norwegian Embassy. Read about the events of the week, and see more pictures below
This year's exhibiting member companies were offered excellent opportunities to interact with crucial partners and stakeholders. Among them, State Secretary Tone Skogen of the Ministry of Defence, National Armaments Director Morten Tiller of the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency, State Secretary Daniel Bjarmann-Simonsen of the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry (NFD), Chief of the Norwegian Army MajGen Odin Johannessen, as well as key personnel from the Norwegian Defence Research Est. (FFI), and Norwegian Special Operations Forces (NORSOF).
More than 20 Team Norway participants ran the AUSA Army Ten Miler race this year. Team NADIC of course came out to cheer the participants on. Read more about this year's race here.
From Invasion to Innovation
The Norwegian-American Defense Industry Council gathered members, industry, and government representatives at the Intercontinental for a half-day discussion on defense cooperation, technology transfer, and innovation exchange between close allies. Prominent speakers and panelists included State Secretary Tone Skogen, from the Norwegian Ministry of Defence, Chief of the Norwegian Army MajGen. Odin Johannessen, OSD Director of Strategy and Defense Mr. Ben FitzGerald, and Research Director of the Innovation and Industrial Development Division at the Norwegian Defence Research Est. (FFI), Ms. Hanne Bjork.
The seminar also kicked off Hacking 4 Allies, a joint collaboration between Innovation Norway, the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), BMNT Partners, NADIC, and the Royal Norwegian Embassy. Hacking 4 Allies is a next-generation business development program aimed at solving hard problems within Norwegian and American Special OPS.
From Invasion to Innovation garnered attention from key partners and stakeholders, and paved the way for an interesting winter, as Norwegian companies prepare to solve problems common to both the United States and Norway. NADIC looks forward to continuing the important discussion at the NADIC Conference in the spring.
Thank you to our sponsors for making this event possible
On Tuesday, Oct 9, NADIC hosted close to 200 guests from the Norwegian-American defense and security community for the largest Annual AUSA dinner yet. Prior to the dinner, guests enjoyed a reception at the Transit Pier on the Wharf, next to the viking ship.
Norway for Oceans
The Royal Norwegian Embassy hosted a series of blue economy seminars, following the launch of the Norwegian Government's comprehensive ocean strategy earlier this year. In 2019, Norway will host the sixth Our Ocean Conference, gathering world leaders, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and academia to make actionable and tangible commitments to protect and conserve the ocean. The ocean seminars hosted by the Embassy underlined the themes of the upcoming conference, with focal points being sustainable ocean opportunities, marine plastic pollution, and maritime transportation. The Future of Maritime Transportation seminar was made possible by NADIC member KONGSBERG and was followed by an evening reception and a KONGSBERG Showcase of Technologies.
